Building a site like moleculargeek.net is probably nothing for the professional that has developped many useful tools over the years. For the amateur, this task is made easier by the many free tools that were made available on the web by the open source community. Here is the place where I should give the credit to the many developers which shared their work so that people like me could develop their own small but somewhat efficient website...

Moleculargeek.net's core

The core of moleculargeek.net is based on joomla 1.0.13. This open source content management system offers a relatively simple interface to publish basic content and manage users access. It also functions as a base for numerous additional components, modules and plugins which add various functionality to the core system. Many of them are free and were released under permissive licenses.

Components, modules and plugins

Comment system

Probably the most useful component of moleculargeek.net is AkoComment Tweaked Special Edition in combination with its corresponding plugin. These tools allow the registered users to post comments on my articles and pick their favorites and were developed by Arthur Konze (http://www.artistworks.net/) and Bernard Gilly (http://www.visualclinic.fr/). The template used to render the comments was slightly modifed to better match the main template of the site.

Optimization for search engines

The search engines optimization including the sitemap creation, keywords optimization and URL rewriting is ensured by the OpenSEF 2.0.0 component.

Additional components

Mark Fabrizio's (http://www.joomlicious.com/) small component, My Content 1.1.13, fills a gap in Joomla CMS by providing an management interface of all published and unpublished articles through the frontend.

 Template

The site template is based on the free Natura template proposed by joomlashack under a Creative Common - Share alike license. My template is therefore available under the same license. You may download it in the box on the bottom of the page.
